What is the Desfiladero del Tajo in Ronda
The Desfiladero del Tajo in Ronda is a walk through the inside of the gorge that splits the town of Ronda (Málaga) in two: you go down along a path and walkways beside the river Guadalevín, and you need to book a ticket before you come.
From below, the scale of the place changes. The rock walls close in, the water runs along the bottom and the Puente Nuevo rises overhead, a view the town's viewpoints do not give you. General admission costs €12 and is sold on the Turismo de Ronda platform.
The hillside path appears on eighteenth-century plans, tied to the building of the Puente Nuevo and to the mills and orchards of the town. The complete route opened in September 2026.
Before booking, check the conditions: the rules do not permit access to children under 8, nor with a wheelchair or pushchair. The guide to planning your visit covers tickets, opening hours, how to get there and what to bring.
If you want to see what the path is like before you come, open the photos of the route along the walkways.
To understand what you will see
- The landscape of El Tajo, Ronda: the gorge and the Hoya. The gorge and the Hoya del Tajo are two forms of the same landscape. Telling them apart changes what you see when you arrive.
- History of the Desfiladero del Tajo and its hillside path. The path you walk today appears on eighteenth-century plans, tied to the building of the Puente Nuevo.
- The bridges of Ronda: Puente Nuevo, Viejo and Curtidurías. Puente Nuevo, Puente Viejo and Curtidurías. From inside El Tajo, Ronda’s bridges read differently.
- How El Tajo in Ronda was formed: the geology of the gorge. Before Ronda, this was the sea. The calcarenites of El Tajo hold marine fossils from the late Miocene.
- The river Guadalevín: mills, channels and orchards of Ronda. Water did not only cut the gorge: it turned mills, watered orchards and ended up generating electricity.
- Plan your visit to the Desfiladero del Tajo step by step. Four stages so the day does not turn into a race: before, setting off, the walk and the finish.
- Photographing El Tajo in Ronda: tips and rules of the route. Light, framing, and one rule that matters more than any technique: keep the way clear.
- Group visits to the Desfiladero del Tajo. As a family, with friends or with access needs: every group has different questions. Settle them before booking.
