What “going down to El Tajo” means
The phrase usually means changing level: leaving the urban edge of Ronda and approaching the inside of the Guadalevín gorge. From below, the Puente Nuevo, the rock and the river are perceived on a different scale. It is not just about finding a viewpoint photograph; it means entering the gorge space and following the visit instructions as you move through it.
Where it is done today
Access is organised from the area around Plaza de María Auxiliadora, the reference point for the final approach on foot. The Town Council places the completed route between that area and Padre Jesús, beside the Baños Árabes, the Arab baths. To report to the correct point, check the Getting there page and always review the specific instructions in your booking.
The approach and the route are not the same
It helps to separate two moments. First comes the approach from the town to the entrance control; only then does the visit inside the Desfiladero begin. Do not confuse the walk down to the entrance with the time spent on the route, or treat a view of the bridge as enough to start. The visitor guide brings together the conditions and preparation checklist.
Before you go down
Check that you have a booking, that everyone in your group meets the published conditions and that you know how to reach the entrance. Review clothing, footwear, water, luggage and the weather forecast before setting off. During the visit, stay on the marked route, keep the way clear and follow staff instructions, so the experience fits what you came to see.
