Ronda — Desfiladero del Tajo

History of the Desfiladero del Tajo and its hillside path. Walking through the memory of Ronda.

The Desfiladero del Tajo brings together natural heritage and the memory of the city. The completed route brings visitors close to a place that for centuries was bound up with supply, work and construction. That history gives meaning to much of what is seen today as landscape.

Path on the hillside of El Tajo in Ronda

The path and the building of the Puente Nuevo

The hillside path appears on eighteenth-century plans — 1758, 1763, 1778, 1780 and 1786 — connected with workers’ access and the gathering of materials to build the Puente Nuevo. The path is therefore part of the history of the monument and of the solutions that made it possible to work beside the gorge.

The paths to the mills and orchards

The path also connected with the mills, the irrigation channels and the orchards of El Tajo. The city did not end at the edge of the rock: it kept up a daily relationship with the water and with the activities further down. Thinking about those journeys lets you read the gorge as a lived territory, not only a monumental landscape.

A restoration you can now experience

The Desfiladero project is complete. Today’s visit brings together the landscape and its historical reading in a route that lets you get close to the gorge. Beyond the intentions of the works, the experience now is to walk, observe and recognise the relationship between Ronda and El Tajo.
